Last week Jake left Boise to go back to school in Prescott where he was studying Aeronautical Science at Embry Riddle.
Earlier this week, Jake withdrew from Embry Riddle and headed back to Boise. Sometime around 8 am on Wednesday morning, Jake sent me a text letting me know he was only five minutes away.
Jake finished his first semester at the aeronautical university with a 4.0 and was told he is one of his flight instructor's best students. So why did he leave? I wasn't quite sure myself. I hoped he wasn't giving up his dream of becoming a helicopter pilot to be closer to me.
Jake wrote this the day he made his decision to withdraw from Embry Riddle:
Jake
When I told my parents Jake was coming back my mom said, "Yeah, we know, in March, right? For spring break?" For the past few years my parents have let Jake stayed at our house when he visited.
I explained that Jake was coming back to Boise to live. After some initial shock and confusion my mom asked where he planned on staying.
I told my mom that I have a couple friends that are looking for roommates and he could probably stay with them.
"How much would he have to pay?" my mom asked.
"Four-hundred," I guessed. 400 is the amount it seems like most of my friends pay in rent to share a two-three bedroom apartment in Boise.
"Four-hundred is too much," my mom said, "You can tell him he can stay here."
Jake is helping out for rent although my parents told him he doesn't have to. They have been incredibly generous and I am thankful for them and how supportive they have been.
I had a few reserves before Jake moved in. We have not been in the same city for about five years. In a way, our relationship has been kind of artificial in some aspects. Whenever we've seen each other since he joined the Air Force and re-enrolled in school, it's been on a vacation basis. Living and working in the same city is completely different. I was worried our relationship would change for the worse after dealing, coping with, and almost getting used to long-distance for five years.
Whenever Jake visited in the past, we spent nearly every day going on dates to make up for lost time. However, my normal day-to-day life is not nearly as interesting. On most days, I do one of three things when I'm not on campus for one reason or another. I hang around the house, visit my sister Jennifer and her family, or go to the gym. Boring, I know. I live a pretty tame existence.
However, I couldn't have been happier with the way things have been going living a boring, tame existence.
I think this is what I've been missing the most about our relationship--just the every day stuff.
The other night I was editing pictures while Jake started to build a new plane. We were both listening to This American Life, an incredibly boring part of my day-to-day life, if not the most boring part, and we were both enjoying it. And I couldn't have been happier.

This is the progress so far. It's a hydroplane.
